A priest feels the Oprah effect

Oprah Winfrey has chosen a book of short stories by the Nigerian Jesuit priest Fr Uwem Akpan as her coveted 63rd book club selection. The talk show host said Say You’re One Of Them left her “stunned and profoundly moved”. Fr Akpan is pretty stunned, too, by the honour, which is likely to send his book to the top of the US bestseller list.

  1. Sad to report, Australian immigration authorities refused Fr Akpan a visa to visit for the Sydney Writers Festival recently.
